Caravaggio Trail
Discover with this tour the fascinating life of an absolute genius of painting! Michelangelo Merisi (1571-1610), better known as “Caravaggio” from the name of his native town near Milan, was a foreigner in Rome and a newcomer to the elitist community of roman painters. He spent much of his short and adventurous existence in the city frequently involved in scandals, duels and trials, but against all odds he imposed his style as a radical innovation of the Arts of the 1600. His works marked a radical fracture with the painting of his times because of the totally new use of lights and shades in his works (Deposition of Christ). In fact in his works the light sharply reaches the ones touched by Salvation, a vivid contrast to the tragic darkness enshrouding the sinners (Call of St. Matthew). In addiction to this, great scandal was caused also by the models he adopted: in search of an intense, expressive realism, Caravaggio frequently portrayed the scum of the earth: prostitutes, thieves, gamblers (Pilgrims’ Madonna). Their brutal, sensual fascination attracted the attention of the public but caused also great scandal and embarrassment at a point that many works of his were rejected by patrons (S. Jerome). This walk will show you everyday life in  papal Rome through his key points:  St. Angelo castle, St. Angelo bridge, Church of St. Maria Nuova, Navona square, Church of St. Louis of France, Church of St. Augustin
